Because my last post touched upon why Vista is doomed, I wanted to do a more in depth post on why Apple and Linux will kill it.
Apple isn't the main reason why Vista is doomed, but it does contribute to it. With its slew of hilarious commercials and the iPod it will cut into Vista's market share but not that much because you can load Vista onto one any way (I think).
Actually the company that has really killed Vista is Dell. By giving users the option to opt out of Windows, they have opened up a whole new market for Linux which is cheaper and more secure than Windows. Linux will gain market share steadily while Windows loses it, and finally it will culminate in Microsoft leaving the operating system game altogether, at least for the time being.
Vista was too expensive and too late to be a success.

Agreed. Although I don't really believe that MS will leave the OS market, at least not for a very long time.
Microsoft have shot themselves in the foot by leaving it so long since XP, most that have it are quite happy and don't see the need to change, add to that the restrictions, Genuine Advantage and DRM galore that Vista has and it will be a user nightmare.
Linux just needs to be a little more user friendly to make it into the bog time.

Not at all likely. I've been using Unix long before Linux was around and the only GUIs for it were OpenView and HP-VUE. There is no hope at all that Windows will die. It's installation base appeals to the lowest common denomnator. If you haven't noticed MS has been abstracting the user farther away from the OS on every release. For that matter so has many Linux distros. Anyway, business around the world would have to jump ship all at once and be prepared to re-invest in new training, new apps, new tools, all requiring at least a reasonable understanding of the OS. My case in point; ask any MS Word "expert" to create two documents and without using some kind of "Wizard" create a mail merge. Chances are they don't even know what a mail merge is. Unless you are talking to someone who cut their teeth on the DOS version of WordPerfect. Another example; how many "apps broke" when XP SP2 got installed. In 99% of the cases the answer was none. It was just the built-in firewall blocking the need ports.
My point really is there will always be a market for MS Windows as long as people don't want to understand their computers. We call it "user friendly" but it's realy... "don't make me think" There are lots of good things to say about using GUIs and making things "user friendly" but lets be honest, it doesn't matter how un-secure, or power hungry or late the currently release is. Microsoft will continue to feed us the "fast food of operating systems" until we finally realise we neet to exercise (our brains) if we really want to be computer fit.
